If I may...

1. If one person is a frequently flyer, I don't believe those points can be transferrable, even with spouse, it depends on the airline. That's how they make money. So, let say, I have a lot of frequent flyer miles and my husband wanted to fly, if the airline allows me to transfer the points over to him, he may use it but then I would lose those points (the ticket) and have to earn those points again. So, if it takes me 5 yrs to earn a free ticket, I would lose it if I give it to my spouse. At the same time, with frequent flyer miles, I don't believe you actually fly for free but you get a much discounted price off of your ticket. Again, some airlines allow the points to be transferred, others do not. You always have to read the fine prints.

2. Let say your friend is a flight attendent, your parents fly for free and so does your spouse. In addition, you have the buddy passes to hand out to anyone you like. Each flight attendant is given at least 6 buddy passes, quantity varies according to each airline. With buddy passes, you only pay for the taxes rather than the full fare price. They expired in one year and it gets renew the next year. However, with buddy passes, it's on a seniority list..meaning that if JOE has been a flight attendent or pilot for 40 yrs and JANE has only been a flight attendent for 15 yrs, when Joe and Jane gives their buddy passes away, JOE's buddies will get seatings first because, of course, JOE has flied a lot longer. This is also due to the fact that seatings are on available basis only so seniorities gets seatings first. And again, this one does not answer your question, unless that person is very greedy and does not want to let her spouse or parents fly for free and share the buddy passes that she/he has to conjure up some misbelief story about not letting her/his family use it ~ WICKED!

3. A lot of times people do not understand airline rules because TSA rules changes every day according to HomeLand Securities, FEDs and whoever else that the TSA has to abide by. As second language speakers A.) We lack the communication to comprehend those complex rules B.) one flight attendent or flight assistant may explain differently of the rules to customers C.) once you buy a plane ticket, you cannot transfer that ticket to another flyer so, in this case, yes, you do lose the ticket

I almost want to say that there is a miscommunication of the rules the TSA employee explained to your friend and from the method your friend explained to you.

Of course, there are other many reasons that I am not aware of as well....
