Now that I've moved back to Wisconsin and I am working with more Hmong speaking people, please help me with my Hmong. I can read, but it takes me a good half hour to read the forums that I've been reading so far. I have been practicing but I am still really slow. I NEED to learn to sau (write) hmoob cov lu, thiab read hmoob kov zoo zoo. kuv tuj siab thiab kuv yog hmoob thiab but tseem paub sau thiab read hmoob zoo. kuv want to pab peb cov neeg--but kuv tau(have to) pab kuv ua teb tos. please pab kuv thiab. I don't have lots of time to come on-line to chat with a full-time job and taking full time class schedule, but I really want to learn. It's this order I have to take an actual Hmong course for credit. I thought that I would try this first.

Thank you in advance for your help.

sau ntawm moob tsis nyuaj npaum twg hab tabsis qhov teebmeem mas yog moob tsis muaj structured system. Yog le, leejtwg xaav sau lecaag los tsis yuav kev le vim peb sound out ces spell lawm xwb.

Ceevfaaj thaum koj sau ntawv moob vim sau ntawv tsis paub phiv le.

for example: mej kuv phem noj qaab nyob zoo? <--- no miss spelling here. spelling checker can never detect the missed word. I think you really mean "mej puas noj qaab nyob zoo?" the words "puas hab kuv phem are two BIG different meaning.

people like to sound it out and write it. so a lot of hmong people if not all hmong write each sound as a separate slyllable. I think this is wrong. Some words are actually multi-slyllables. for example:

mother-in-law = nam-tais (nam tais=incorrect)

brother-in-law = txiv-dlaab (txiv dlaab=inccorrect)

(ib cov tuabneeg puab sau ua lob lulug le kws, "nam tais, txiv dlaab, nam dlaab."=incorrect)

hot pepper/chilli = hovtxob and not hov txob.

guava = txiv cuabthoj and not txiv cuab thoj

leeche = txiv limtsib and not txiv lim tsib

telephone=telefoos and not te le foos

car=luvfais and not luv fais.

you get the idea..

We are the same, but we are not the same. In my entire life, it took me only 3 hours in class to learn to read and write Hmong. Once it clicks in your head, the difficulty is over. Qhov nyuaj rau koj yog vim tsis muaj tus txawj qhia kom koj totaub, or you just don't get it. :P

Yog lawm! Tsis taub muaj ib tus neej yuas qhia kom kuv nkag siab li. -- things have to be explained to me maybe a few different ways for it to click. And for some reason, writing just does not click.

Kasual-love,

Maybe you're right. I think the problem that you are having right now is the "tone (cim)" sound, like:

Cim:

B

M

J

V

-

S

G

I can see that you are putting the wrong "tone" sound into some of the words. I will use your writing as an example.

YOUR ----- Yog lawm! Tsis taub muaj ib tus neej yuas qhia kom kuv nkag siab li.

MINE ------ Yog lawm! Tsis tau muaj ib tus/g neeg yuav qhia kom kuv nkag siab li.

- I don't know if what you are having trouble is the "tone" sound or you may have someting else?

- But as far as I've seen and known, you were having trouble with the "tone" sound.

- I'm not sure, but that's what I've seen. If you can tell me what's your problem, and then we all can solve.

~ Good luck and don't give up.

:)

You are right---it's the cim. Or maybe it's the way I think the tone should be. I'm not sure. Because looking at what you have above, your writing looks correct--especially after I re-read what I wrote.

Kasual, (Yog koj sau ntawv Meskas zoo lid nod ces kawg muaj teebmeem laud -- haha.)

Tsis tas lid xwb, yog koj xyaum sau ntawv Hmoob/Moob raws-lid "Vajhuamsibluag" ces kawg muaj teebmeem thiaj laud -- HAHA!

Yes, go take a formal "course" for credit. At least that way, you will NOT learn bad, incoherent, and baseless - irrational standards - such as the use of B=np, J=ntse, and BL=npl. Those "three" leading consonant posers among other "proposals" are ludicrous and erroneously and blindly conjured up; purely rooted in "Anglicization/English" ignorance.

And it sounds like you want to learn how to read and write Hmong via "pixie dust magic", because you do not want to invest the time required -- kawg teebmeem laud.

Tsis hais kawm los xyaum ib yam dab-tsid, kawg yuav tsum sid sibhawm thiab caij nyoog.

Looks like you have the jest of it already. The rest will take practice, continued work, and most of all TIME.

Zaum nod ces tej cov tub nxhais lid nod hos nrog pom Hmoob qhov muaj nuj nqid thiab yom -- haha.
